CASPIAN Black Pearl approached us as a newly registered Swiss company with a bold vision. Their business model centered on sourcing the world’s most prestigious Beluga caviar—the crown jewel of the caviar world—in 3-5 kg cans from Iran and Russia. This precious cargo would be transformed into luxury portions of 10, 20, 50, and 100 grams for discerning customers across Europe and the USA. As a new entrant in the highly competitive luxury caviar market, where heritage often speaks louder than innovation, they needed every element of their brand to be perfect from day one.

Challenge

The stakes were extraordinarily high in the ultra-premium caviar market, where reputation is everything and first impressions last forever. As the company’s marketing and branding manager emphasized, any misstep in the design process could cause irreparable damage to the brand before it even entered the market. We faced multiple intricate challenges: incorporate the letter “C” into a logo that would resonate with caviar symbolism, develop entirely unique package designs for a new brand in the premium caviar market, and perhaps most crucially, create packaging worthy of a product that sells for thousands of dollars per kilogram. In a market dominated by centuries-old brands and traditional presentations, we needed to strike a delicate balance between innovation and timeless luxury.

Strategic Approach

We began with extensive research into the world of luxury caviar, creating a bridge between traditional wisdom and modern luxury. This wasn’t just about design—we needed to understand everything from caviar fish species to seed characteristics, supply methods, and proper serving techniques. During this research, we discovered something remarkable: the Beluga sturgeon, source of the world’s most precious caviar, naturally forms a C-shape during spawning. This connection between nature and branding became even more meaningful given the company’s name CASPIAN, linking the ancient waters where these magnificent fish thrive to our contemporary luxury market. This insight became the cornerstone of our design approach.

Solution

Our design solution emerged from the perfect fusion of nature and luxury. For the logo, we transformed the Beluga sturgeon’s distinctive C-shape into an elegant symbol that captured both the letter “C” and the grace of these remarkable fish. The mark was refined through multiple iterations until it achieved the perfect balance of sophistication and recognition.

For the packaging, we pursued innovation through materials. After extensive exploration, we discovered a unique solution: oyster-covered paper with back-pasting. Before proceeding, we conducted thorough research across global caviar brands to confirm this was truly unprecedented in the industry. The resulting labels paired perfectly with the brand name while adding a distinctive tactile luxury element to each package. The materiality of the packaging itself tells the story of the sea, creating an immediate connection to the product’s origin.

We developed a complete system spanning various size formats, each maintaining the brand’s premium positioning while adapting to different usage occasions. From the intimate 10g portions to the generous 100g presentations, every detail was considered to create a consistent luxury experience.

To validate our design decisions, we created prototype packages and conducted real-world testing in premium grocery stores, placing our products alongside established caviar brands. The results exceeded expectations: not only did our packaging draw immediate attention, but customers consistently assumed CASPIAN Black Pearl was an established luxury brand with a long heritage—exactly the perception we aimed to achieve.
